Adult Child Interaction Training - based on the training from Keena Cummings

 

"Supporting children’s language, learning and communication skills through the interaction of practitioners."

 

 

This training focuses on developing observation skills and interaction skills of Early Years Practitioners through the use of video reflection.

 

The training supports practitioners to analyse and reflect on their interaction through positive refection facilitated by Anna Friend Speech and Language Therapist. Anna will help to develop practitioner’s skills in reflecting on their interaction and adapting their interaction in order to support speech, language, communication and social interaction.

 

Practitioners will become skilled in observing children as individuals and gain an understanding of how their interaction style needs to be flexible and adapt to each child’s developmental needs.

 

Practitioners will choose a particular child that they have concerns about, and this child will be the focus of the training. Throughout the training the practitioners will be supported to implement a range of strategies which are evidence based to support speech, language communication and social interaction skills.

 

These strategies will be a key structure in enabling the practitioners to adapt their use with other children within the setting.

 

The use of video enables the therapist and practitioners to look at their interaction in detail, and it also allows practitioners to use the footage in order to support the implementation of the training within their early years setting.

 

Training Breakdown

All practitioners must bring a video of themselves interacting with a child to the initial training session. This will not be viewed by anyone during the session, it will only be viewed by Anna. It will be used in session 2. 
 

1st Session

3 hour training session

Developing an understanding of the importance adult interaction. Agreement of time slots for paired sessions

2nd Session

First videoed session

The group will be split into pairs each pair will attend a 1 hour session where they will bring an individual video to reflect upon. Strategies will be discussed.

3rd Session

Second videoed session

Continued reflection and adaptation of interaction styles.

4th Session

Third videoed session

Continued reflection and feedback of how the practitioners have progressed over the three weeks.

5th Session

2 hour evaluation session

This session is a flexible session where practitioners can bring their videos to watch. We can evaluate the training and the development of practitioners’ interaction. We can discuss how the training can be used within their individual settings.

 


 

  • Cost £1000 for the whole training (not based on the number of participants)
  • Maximum participants 10 (cost cannot be reduced for less practitioners attending due to the time commitment of the training course)
  • Schools can link up and send pairs of practitioners from a range of settings

There is the option to have follow up sessions where Anna can visit individual settings and observe how the training has been implemented and provide advice and recommendations in order to continue to develop ways to use the training affectively.

 

This is cost of £200 which will include a morning or afternoon session or observation and discussion with the practitioners that attended the training course. Any discussions with teachers, SENCos or management staff in order to discuss the long term implementation of the training.

 

 

Understanding Language Development and Enhancing Learning through Questioning:

 

 

"Practical ways to develop language and providing opportunities to extend children’s thinking abilities, using a model of hierarchical questioning."

 

This training course will provide practitioners with a developmental structure for the use of questioning. It will help practitioners to think about what language demands they are placing upon children when they are asking specific questions. The training will support practitioners to understand why children may not understand some types of questions.

 

The training will introduce a hierarchy of questioning and explain how this can be used to assess children’s understanding at specific language levels. We will also provide information about strategies to support the development of children’s understanding and ways to extend their learning throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage.

 

3 hour training course £350 for the whole course not based on number of participants

Minimum 6 staff - maximum 20

Supporting Child Development Within the Foundation Stage Setting:

 

"Understanding speech, language, play, and interaction development. Applying knowledge and planning to enhance learning within the setting."

 

This training course provides an overview of attention and listening, speech sound and phonological awareness development. Anna Friend Speech and Language Therapist will explain how delays in the development within these areas can impact on the development of children’s language and literacy skills. We will discuss the differences between specific speech sound difficulties and general developmental delays. The training will enable practitioners to understand the differences between these difficulties and how to identify them.

 

In the second part of the training the focus will be on the management of such difficulties and how the management of specific and general delay can differ. Maureen Ward will support practitioners in adapting Letters and Sounds through differentiation of activities in order to support children with varying abilities.
